MORE AID URGED

Church Youth View The New Zealand Government has a moral obligation to step up its programme of overseas aid to a higher level than ever before considered, and such aid has a prior claim to defence on Government funds according to a statement issued in Christchurch by the standing committee of the National Council of Churches of New Zealand Youth Committee. The committee consists of representatives from the Church of England, Presbyterian and Methodist churches, the Baptist Union, Congregational Union, Churches of Christ, Salvation Army, Society <rf Friends, and youth organisations, including the Y.M.C.A., the Y.W.C.A., and the Boy Scouts. The statement continues: “since it is better to save life than to kill; to bind up wounds than to cause them; this country should carefully weigh up the money it is spending on its defence in contrast to that spent on aid. It is our belief that the latter has a prior claim on Government funds.”
