High Standards Set At B.H.S. Sports

Breaking a record at the Christchurch Boy’s High School’s annual swimming sports Is an unusually hard assignment, because of the big number of New Zealand champions who have passed through the school. At the 1966 meeting on Monday, six new records were created —a feat which iiHlusttated vividly the high standard of performance achieved by the championship contenders. The senior championship was won by R. Sandom, with 16 points, from R. Forster, with 12. Sandom won both freestyle races in fast times and in the 100 yards backstroke clipped o.4sec from G. R. Stringer’s record of lm!n 7.7 sec. Four of the competitors had returned to Christchurch in the early hours from Napier, where two of them, A. B. Kindred and J. Edmonds, had each won two New Zealand titles. Kindred had set a new mark of 4mtn 53.65ec. in retaining the 440 yards open freestyle title before leaving for Napier, and yesterday he set a further record of lm:n s.Bsec in the Intermedllate 100 yards backstroke event. Edmonds simasihed R. J. Hay’s intermediate 100 yard breaststroke record by 3.3 sec. and Hay’s junior mark of 49.25ec for 66 2-3 yards breaststroke was beaten by half a second by his younger brother, Peter, another Canterbury Representative. Before the natfonail championships, L. Furness had beaten Kindred in the Intermediate 220 yards freestyle event, but at Napier Kindred won the gold medal over this distance, with Furness third. On Monday, however, Furness buitt on his earlier advantage with wins in the 33 1-3 yards and 100 yards freestyle races to take the Intermediate championship. The slixth record was created by S. Johnston, the under-14 champion, over 33 1-3 yards freestyle. His time was 20.2 sec. The champions and runnersup were: Senior: R. Sandom (16); R. Forster (12). Intermediate: L, Furness (20); A. B. Kindred (16). Junior: P. Hay (20): J. Tillson (9). Under-14: S. Johnston (16): P. Shelton (12). Results were:— Championship Events Senior.—22o yards freestyle: R. Sandom 1, R. Forster 2, H. Bezar 3.
