Runner Shows Potential

The tremendous potential shown by the Toe H sprinter, R. Jones, was one of the main features of the first session of the Canterbury under-age track and field championships at Rugby Park on Saturday.

Jones narrowly won the under-17 220 yards in the outstanding time of 22.95ec. This was .6sec inside the old re-

cord held jointly by A. W. Tweedie (Old Boys) and D. Campbell (Toe H) but it will go unrecognised because of a following wind only one foot a second in excess of the allowable maximum.

Instead the record will go to the High School Old Boys athlete, G. Lanham, who finished runner-up in the final in 23sec. Earlier in the day he won his heat in 23sec, ,6sec inside the old record, and at the time wind assistance was below the allowable maximum. Jones also won his heat but his time was slightly slower at 23.25ec, although still inside the old record. Another record fell in the girls’ under-17 100 yards when the present senior Canterbury champion, Miss J. Rose Geraldine), went through the tape in the final in 11.2 sec. This bettered the old record held by Miss K. Croawell (Westport) by ,2sec. The second placed runner, Miss B. Poulsen (Technical), equalled the old record with 11.4 sec.

In the under 17 boys’ 4 x 110 yards relay, the Toe H team (M. Chapman, G. Sewell, N. Harrington and Jones) set the first record with a splendid run in 45.45ec. The artificial standard was 46.55ec.

The two Technical club rivals, Misses B. Poulsen and B. A. Flynn, continued to force each other on to even greater achievements In the shot put. Miss Flynn broke the old record first with a magnificent throw of 42ft Ilin, only to have it snatched away from her by Miss Poulsen, who won the title with a throw of 43ft 6}in.

Miss Poulsen also won the long jump title after beating Miss Flynn by less than lOin. In the heats of the girls’ under 15 100 yards three competitors beat the Canterbury record of 12.1 sec, set by Miss L. Johns this year. In the first heat Miss A. Denmouth (Technical) recorded 11.9 sec and Miss Johns (Technical) 12sec. In the second heat Miss A. Hood (Technical) w-on in 12sec. Miss Denmouth won the final in an outstanding ll.Ssec, but the time will go unrecognised because of wind assistance. Miss Johns was second and Miss Hood third.

The Technical team (Misses Denmouth, Hood, L. Anderson and L. Johns) won the 4 x 110 yards relay in the record time of 51.9 sec. Results were:—
