RULING BY COURT
Florist Shop Wages
The Court of Arbitration had ruled that staff in a florists’s shop were entitled to be paid double-time rates, in addition to the ordinary weekly wage, for all time worked on Saturday mornings, said the secretary of the Canterbury Shop Assistants’ Union (Mr P. M. Velvin). The ruling concerned the case of Odering and May. florists, of Riccarton road, heard before Christinas in Christchurch. The decision, said Mr Velvin, was an important one for the union. The company concerned, he said, had been giving members of the staff half a day off during the week in lieu of payment for Saturday morning employment. The shop assistants had been employed in the shop on Saturday mornings for four hours in the preparation of floral tributes. Mr Velvin said the shop assistants’ award permitted staff to do this work on Saturday mornings, but the question had arisen as to the payment to which they were entitled.
The Labour Department, said Mr Velvin, had previously said that the florist would not have to pay doubletime rates for Saturday morning work.
