Racehorse Wins Kaikoura Show Awards

A four-year-old mare from a Riccarton racing stable scored a notable win in an unusual role on Saturday.

Taken to the annual Kaikoura show by Miss Hazel Lindsay, of Riccarton, Frolicsome, from the stable of R. Preece, won three* hack classes, and ended the day by winning the hack championship.

Frolicsome's win was most unusual, for she has been in full training and raced at the recent mid-summer meeting at Riccarton. She was first shown by Miss Lindsay last season, winning two maiden hack events. Since then, she has performed a dual role, racing at local meetings, and competing at local shows. Miss Lindsay said on Saturday that she felt Frolicsome had previously been at s disadvantage in the show ring for she had been in racing condition rather than show condition. The mare was eased after the recent mid-summer meeting at Riccarton. and on Saturday she was in fine fettle The judge (Mr R. T. Barker, of Scargill) described her as a beautifully mannered and paced hack. Best-Mannered Frolicsome began the day on Saturday with a second in a class for mares most suitable for breeding. She then won the list hack class from an entry of 13, the woman’s hack class from an entry of 21. and was judged the bestmannered and paced hack from a class of 19. Her championship win was a first—for both horse and rider. Frolicsome will not return to training at Riccarton. When Miss Lindsay returned home yesterday she

left the mare with its ownerbreeder., Mr J. B. DouglasClifford of Stonyhurst. Frolicsome could be seen at shows again, but she will eventually be used as a broodmare. As a racehorse she did not measure up to her known ability. While she has not won this season, she gained some minor placings. Bleak Day The light horse and pony classes were the main feature of the Kaikoura Show held at South Bay Domain. Conditions, however, were most unfavourable for a show. While the rain held off. a cold southerly prevailed throughout the day. It was bleak. Gate takings declined, being only £6O compared with £B4 last year. Over-all entries were down, but there were increases in the light horse and sheep classes. The pony classes, as usual, attracted good competition, and the judge (Mr George Coe, of Leeston) said that since he had judged at Kaikoura six years ago, the standard had improved a lot. He complimented the youngsters on the way they had brought out their ponies. Mr Coe thought the champion pony under 14.2 hands—May Tombs’s Glaze—would do well at any show. Competition was not strong in the sheep classes, but the judges considered the top

sheep were well up to standard. Mr W. Dampier Crossley, of Parnassus, who judged the Comedales, said he had judged at Kaikoura previously. and he thought the sheep this year were an improved lot. Mr J. C. Craddock, of Flaxton. who judged the Southdowns, considered the sheep were well brought out. They would hold their own at any of the country shows, he said. The Southdown classes were a clean sweep for J. K. Fincham, who had travelled the best part of 100 miles from Hawarden. Mr T. D. Paterson, of Amberley, who judged the fat sheep, said too many entries were over-fat. With the accent today on a leaner type of carcase, the over-fat sheep —although they looked nice—had to be placed accordingly, he said. Results: — Following is the championship list.
