Rio Has Brilliant Melbourne Win

The farmer New Zealand champion, Rio, returned to form in brilliant style when he got up in the very last stride to win the weight-fbr-a®e seven-furlongs C. F. Orr Stakes at Sandown Park, Melbourne, on Saturday. Brilliantly ridden by Australia’s top international jockey, W. Williamson, Rio came with a great run in the last furlong to just beat the Melbourne Cup winner Light Fingers. Rin finned from 12/1 to 6/1 and landed a big betting plunge. The Orr Stakes was one of the most tbriHing finishes seen in Meibourne for years. With 100 yards to go four horses had a chance of winning. Another New Zealander in the race, Empyreus, fell after a furlong.

Because of Ms great win, Rin is now challenging for favouritism tar the £12,150

Australian Cup (10 furlongs) at Flemington on March 14. His trainer, B. Courtney, who has brought Bio back to top form, said the Australian Cup was the horse’s main autumn mission. Courtney has offered the Cup ride to Williamson but the jockey said he would be back in England when the trig race was being run.
