Scottish Jockey’s Death

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The 29-year-old Takanini jockey, T. J. Sharkey, who was killed in a motor accident while returning from the Rotorua Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday had been in New Zealand only two yean and a half. Born in Hamilton, Scotland, Sharkey came to Auckland on a "short” visit to a married sister. The conditions impressed him and he decided to stay. He won on his very first mount, Fox Tan, at Pukekohe in September 1963. Meanwhile he rode regularly in Auckland and Waikato with fair success. Recently he shifted from Avondale to Takanini and with his willingness and pleasant manner quickly became popular. Sharkey, who was married soon after arriving in New Zealand, is survived by his wife and a seven-month old son.
