5 OF 13 FINISH AFTER SMASH

A spectacular smash on the home turn eliminated more than half of the field in the Airways Stakes, second leg of the on-course double at Addington Raceway on Saturday night.

The each-way favourite, Donald Dundee, was the first to fall. At the time he was disputing the pace with the second fancy, Co-Pilot. Within seconds there were horses and drivers all over the track. Eight were put out of the race. Five finished the course. Victory went to the 10/11 favourite Le Whip, which paid £3B 6s 6d and £7 17s 6d for a win-and-place, and £331 7s 6d for £1 wtih the Mysti-que-Waiau Toa bracket in the double. Le Whip settled down near the tail of the field and had nine of 12 rivals ahead of him as they ran into the last half-mile. But after the smash he had only the driverless CoPilot ahead of him and nothing else within close challenging distance. Le Whip won by two lengths and a half from Roydon Prince w’hich beat the little-fancied Tracey Hanover by half a length. On Probation was two lengths and a half away fourth and well clear of Felis. the only other runner to finish the course. Led Last Mile Mystique overcame an early break to lead for the last mile of the Lyttelton Handicap. She came to the straight with a handy lead on Oh Johnny and continued strongly to win by four lengths. Glen Dee was second and Dispense a length away third Both lost ground at the start but were in the group closest to the leader on the home turn.

Hoana made ground from mid-field for fourth. She was two lengths from Dispense and three lengths clear of Rough Sea, which broke near the straight entrance. The weakening Oh Johnny led in the others.

By Half A Head

Scottish Advance ran on the inside of the third line to the straight in the Christchurch Stakes. J. A. Carmichael found racing room for her alongside the hubrail in the last furlong and she ran strongly to win by half a head. Quality Inn. second on the outer to the straight and the leader inside the last furlong,

was second by half a length from Chief Smile, which had been fourth equal for most of the race. Chief Smile caught and beat the pacemaker, Set Sail, by a head. There was another head to Eone Navarre, which received the run of the race and half a neck to Linkwood Lady, which failed to quicken after sharing the same line as the winner until the home turn. Favourite Wins Rannach Lad justified solid backing and kept a winning record intact in the Harewood Handicap for which he was favourite. K. Purdon had Rannach Lad tucked in behind the pacemaker, Del Reno, for the first mile. He took him to the front half a mile out and from that point had his rivals in bother. Rannach Lad won by two lengths from Stella Globe, which ran it out gamely after being under a hard drive for the last half-mile. Del Reno was third. She was three-quarters of a length from Stella Globe and three lengths and a half in front of Marcus Aurelius, which ran on from mid-field. Fourth On End Frosty Heather had his third change of drivers in three weeks, but that did not prevent him from winning his fourth successive race for his Wellington owner, Mr R. A. McKenzie. D. Mangos handled Frosty Heather when he won as a sprinter at Nelson. Then he won twice in the hands of R. L. Stewart at Blenheim. His trainer, J; B. Noble, was his driver in the Canterbury Park Stakes on Saturday night Frosty Heather improved from the fourth line to follow Finesse, Inky Boy, Local Star, Chief Command and Final Count around the home turn, was making ground quickly through the middle between Finesse and Chief Command inside the furlong and ran it out best to win by half a neck. Chief Command was second by three-quarters of a length from Finesse and Option, which dead-heated for third. Option finished fast from midfield and was clear of Abbey Frost another to make ground near the end. Run Of Race Indecision followed some rather unlucky racing with an impressive win in the twomtle Pioneer Handicap. He received the run of the race behind Moutere Bay and pulled out to challenge early in the run home. He gradually moved up to the leader and over the last few yards was doing the better and won handily by a length. Moutere Bay fought on gamely for second, a length in front of Don Caesar, which finished boldly from mid-field on the turn. Bright Highland was only a head away fourth, ahead of Gayiee, Bob Again and Legendary, with a gap to Majeur.

Deserved Win Lusty Lad followed three consecutive placings with a deserved win in the Farewell Stakes,, giving has trainer, C. S. Donald, and driver, R. P. Nyhan, their second win for the night. Lusty Lad, followed by Epona, improved from the seven furlongs and took the lead with four furlongs and a half left. He drew clear early in the run home and won easily by a length and a half. Merry Morning shaped like an early winner when she finished gamely from mid-field to cut Epona out of second by a length. Southern Rev battled on for a rather distant fourth, with Gold Maru and Guyfa well clear of the remainder.
