AILING SON SEEN
Mother Helped Bv Groups
Co-operation among four service organisations in Ashburton and rapid organisation, allowed an Ashburton woman. Mrs C. M. Allfrey, of 10 Beatty crescent to go to Sydney to see her seriously-ill son within a few hours of her receiving the news of her son’s illness on Friday. A neighbour approached the Ashburton Lions Club at 10.30 a.m. The president of the club (Mr R. Elliot) approached the three other service organisations in Ashburton, Jaycees, Rotary and Round Table, to raise the £65 fare money to Sydney, and all agreed to help. Mrs Allfrey left Ashburton at 2.15 p.m. by car and boarded a Sydney-bound aircraft at Harewood at 4.45 p.m. Accommodation for Mrs Allfrey while she is in Sydney was arranged through her church, the Salvation Army. She arrived in Sydney at 5.50 p.m. (Australian time) only a few hours after hearing her son was ill.
