SOUND START

On a fine batting pitch, Lancaster Park began superbly, with M. D. Randle's stylish and aggressive left-hand batting bringing him 35 to half an hour, and A. G. Rose playing most competently for his 59. Park reached 100 In 84 minutes before P. Thomas, bowling with very good pace and direction, went through the batting at high speed. Thomas had had 14 taken from his first over, and Lancaster Park's good start was supplemented by R. T. Dowker’s solidity, but Thomas then took seven wickets for 28 more runs. Sydenham started badly, but A. J. Howard held out stubbornly, and D. L. Gallop was his usual aggressive self, reaching 50 in 81 minutes. Playing senior cricket for the first time after a knee operation, B. Andrews was the best of the Park bowlers. The umpires were Messrs W. R. Hobbs and A. Flanagan.
