FRENCH ROCKET
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—-Copyright) HAMMAGUIR (Algeria), February 13 A failure in the rocketfiring mechanism yesterday foiled France’s bid to launch a scientific satellite from her Hammaguir base, on the edge of the Sahara.
When the order to fire was given, the three stage diamant rocket remained firmly on the launch pad. Officials said that the rocket was believed to be undamaged and could be used again. Professor Jean Coulomb, president of the French space research centre, speaking at the centre at Bretigny, near Paris, said the fire order was not transmitted to the rocket, possibly because of a fault in the transmission cable.
