Prisoners Of War Not Criminals'

(N.Z.PA. Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, February 12. The United States warned today that any attempt by North Vietnam to try captured Americans as war criminals would be a violation of international obligations that Hanoi had agreed to.

The State Department issued a special statement after reports from Cairo that North Vietnamese authorities had told the Egyptian Government that American servicemen held in the north would be tried as war criminals. The State Department’s statement drew attention to

North Vietnam’s responsibilities under the 1949 Geneva convention on the treatment of prisoners of war—a convention to which North Vietnam adhered in 1957. According to the latest available figures—-those on February 9—there were 60 American prisoners confirmed or suspected of being held by North Vietnam.
