More Gifts To C.O.R.S.O.

In the first 40 days of 1966, New Zealanders have given nearly £4500 to the C.0.R.5.0. Freedom from Hunger campaign.

The national secretary (the Rev. H. C. Dixon) said today that the returns were most encouraging and were well up on last year’s total for the period. “The latest news of the

drastic set-back to Samoa’s economy caused by the recent hurricane and fresh reports of the devastating Indian famine threatening hundreds of millions convince us of the need to step up with renewed urgency our national campaign for 1966,” said Mr Dixon.

“To those who have already given so generously this year, we give our profound thanks. To those who are planning to help in New Zealand’s rapidly growing C.0.R.5.0. world aid programmes, we can only emphasise that your contribution will have far-reaching effects.” Mr Dixon said gifts had been received at the campaign headquarters this year from all parts of the country. They included a legacy of £l6OO from a Taranaki woman, £3OO from a Wellington seaside coffee lounge, £2OO from delegates to the recent Hamil-

ton ecumenical youth conference for an “Operation 21” Freedom from Hunger campaign project in India, £2OO from Wellington persons, £lOO from Gisborne, four gifts of £5O from Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Nelson and Otago, two donations of £25 from Auckland and Wellington, four donations of £2O from Auckland, Wanganui, Otago and Southland, two donations of £2O from Palmerston North and nearly £l2OO in smaller contributions from many districts. These latter donations included £5 from a teen-age Maori girl in Rotorua, a monthly 10s gift from an old age pensioner, £4 from a married couple who decided to increase their monthly gifts to C.0.R.5.0. from 30s to £2 each and £2 5s from a young Waikato man whose regular gifts are the result of a recent unexpected rise in pay.
