GASWORKS ' IN MESS’
Cheap Coal Blamed
(N.Z. Press Association)
GREYMOUTH, Feb. 11
The Auckland gasworks has degenerated into a terrible mess because the controlling authorities had used a cheap open-cast low grade coal from Kopuka in the Waikato, said the secretary of the United Mineworkers’ of New Zealand, Mr J. White. He was commenting on an Auckland report that 20,000 tons of Australian coal had been imported to enable the replacement of retorts and remedial work to cope with the demand for gas. “We never hear of any complaints from gasworks in Wellington or Christchurch because they use a good blend of top quality gas-producing coal,” said Mr White.
Railway Sheds Clearing The pre-holiday congestion of goods in the Christchurch goods sheds had been largely overcome by the Railways Department. said the secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. T. Alston). Mr Alston visited E Shed for inward cargo in the railway sheds with the member of Parliament for St. Albans (Mr H. J. Walker). They were accompanied by the district traffic manager of railways (Mr R. M. Leineweber).
