Showman Charged
(N.Z. Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Feb. 11. Leslie Joseph Besgrove, aged 38, a showman, better known as the marathon talker Lester Mcßride, was remanded in custody until next Thursday when he appeared before Mr J. D. Murray, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on four charges of false pretences involving valueless cheques.
Besgrove was represented by Mr W. McAlevey, who applied for bail. Besgrove was billed to appear with his show at Waikouaiti this week-end, and was confident that the profits from his appearance would meet the outstanding cheques involved in the charges, he said. Detective Senior-Sergeant McLennan said that 10 more charges would be preferred. Besgrove was just out of prison for similar offences, the Magistrate said. He refused Mr McAlevey’s application.
