INVERCARGILL.
The weather was good and the ground excellent for jumping on the first day of the Southland Horse Society show yesterday.
It opened the South Island jumping circuit and featured teams from Australia and the North Island, and many of the best South Island horses. Main interest centred on the Table A event for A Grade horses, which gave spectators a chance to see for the first time all the visiting horses in action.
Fourteen horses jumped clear in the first round over a flowing, straight forward course, but after the fences had been raised quite considerably for the second round, only four horses were left to jump off against time.
The standard of jumping deteriorated under pressure and all placed horses had faults in the final jump off The event was won by the Australian, W. Roycroft. The show continues today when the feature event will be the Rutherford Cup for area teams. Results:
