Pit Stops

i Those who have been S fortunate enough to see i Christchurch’s interna--5 tional speedway rider, 5 Ivan Mauger, in action at J the Templeton track in rei cent weeks could not fail to J appreciate his tremendous J ability and great sense of j sportsmanship. Since his j return from England, * where he was captain of s the Newcastle Diamonds, s he has handed on many s useful tips to promising 5 local riders and there has 5 been a very obvious imJ provement in the stanJ dard. * Last Saturday night he * was absent for the first s time for some weeks and s this detracted much from i the motor-cycle events. In-

s stead, he was competing 5 for a make-shift British i League team against New J Zealand at Western 5 Springs, Auckland. s There he proved beyond .5 any shadow of doubt that s he was in a class above the

top Western Springs 1 riders. R. Andrews and ! B. Subritsky. He de- 1 livered a stunning blow to ! Auckland’s pride by win- I ning every event he con-1 tested and breaking three ; track records in the pro-; cess. ; In the first heat he took i l.lsec off the four-lap ! clutch start record held by ! Subritsky. Then in the ; fourth heat, he met and de- ; feated Andrews, who has ; refused to come to Christ- ; church and race against ; him here. Andrews, who ■ has been regarded as the ■ top resident rider in New : Zealand for several years, ! was no match for Mauger i whatsoever. The Christ- ; church rider clipped an- ; other .2sec off his new four-lap record in this ; race. They met again later in the meeting and it was : Mauger who triumphed once more. Mauger scored the maximum possible points but unfortunately, his team-mates were never in the picture and New Zealand won comfortably, 30-18. It is worthy of note that R. Duckworth, who holds the records at Templeton for four laps and one lap, was completely outclassed by Mauger. This is a clear indication of faulty timekeeping when the records were set for Mauger has been unable to threaten any of them since his return from England. At the conclusion of the international contest, Mau- <; ger started at the rear of ; the field with Andrews in * the open handicap and J romped away to win by j more than a quarter of a 5 lap. In this race he set ani other track record for flyt ing starts, clipping .6sec s off Andrews’ old time. 5 s? SS $ 5 The nine-year-old home--5 built Lycoming Special of t J. Boyd (Papatoetoe) once 5 again demonstrated its J great reliability to finish * a well deserved third in the J Waimate 50 Gold Star road j race last Saturday. Boyd s rarely put a foot wrong to i finish ahead of the Papai kura driver, R. W. Thack--5 well, in a factory-built 1.5 i litre Brabham. s ❖ ❖ ❖ 5 J. Mullins (Christ--5 church) has won the New * Zealand championship for * modified saloons in his im- » maculately prepared Mini ? Cooper S. His fine win over s A. Hyslop, driving a simis lar car, in the modified < saloon car race at Waii mate last Saturday gave 5 him enough points to enJ sure this. "/ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZV
