'NODDING’ ENGINE

A WORKING diesel engine which turns around to face passers by and “nods its head” in greeting will be an unusual feature on the Leyland Motor Corporation stand at the international construction equipment exhibition in Munich. The engine is one of several power and transmission units on a display representing the most determined assault yet made on the European construction market by the special products and overseas manufacturing division of the corporation. Eight member companies of the corporation have produced the exhibits, which represent a selection of the wide range of equipment made available for manufacturers of mobile and stationary construction machinery. Amusement is not the aim of the “nodding” engine, for its action illustrates how a Leyland industrial diesel can operate at any angle likely to be encountered by an earthmover. The engine is a sixcylinder unit of 11.1 litres capacity and is of a type now operating in over 50 countries. While on working display the engine will rotate through 360 degrees, and at the same time tilt 45 degrees longitudinally and 22 degrees laterally from the vertical.
