Shopping Mall Planned For Fendalton

Plans to establish a new shopping area off Memorial avenue near the Clyde road intersection at s Fendalton were men - I; tioned when the Wai- . mairi County Council’s 5 town-planning committee I heard objections to planning proposals. ! Mr J. R. Woodward, mak- > i ing submissions for two of -! the objectors, said that it was ’; common knowledge that there ' was a move afoot to establish ■ i a new retail area on the south i side of Memorial avenue on i what is known as the Law i> block. New Centre ‘ | “Some time ago, the town 1 planning committee of the ; | council had a round table dis- . i mission with property owners I in the present shopping centre (to obtain their views on the ; i suggestion that the centre be , J replaced by a new centre in 'the block bounded by Clyde | road, Memorial avenue, Otara . street and Hamilton avenue,” I he said. “Some publicity has been given recently to the suggestion as if in fact an application had been made to estab- . lish a supermarket there, and ; there has been a resulting display of concern by people ■ who have jumped to a number of wrong conclusions as to the i nature of the proposal. , “There is a proposal to es- • tablish a shopping mall to the ■ rear of the block, the shop- . ping mall to combine with the

: petrol service station which is lat present on the comer. : “A considerable amount of ; research has already been done and should shortly be completed in regard to the suitability of the locality and the lay-out, having regard to the fact that it is a residential area, its appearance, questions of access and the use of the iarea for off-street parking, with the long-term view that it could become a substitute for the existing shopping centre at the intersection of Fendalton road and Clyde road.” Mr Woodward said that as traffic grew, it would become ■ more difficult to use the existing shops. It would be poor town-planning to deprive a good locality of its shops without providing a substitute at no great distance. He represented two members of a syndicate interested in the project. The syndicate would complete a detailed proposal and submit it to the council, possibly within a month, to suggest how the existing shops could gradually be relocated. BUSINESS OR PERSONAL,
