Closer Liaison Of Industry-Science

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 10. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) today urged the council of the new Standards Association of New Zealand to help to bring about a closer association of industry and science.

i In hits address for the first meeting of the council, comprising members from all the major national bodies associated with standards, Mr Marshall also suggested that the council secure Rs quickly as possible the widest support and income. He said the Government envisaged making a grant to the association. “It would, however, be difficult to justify the transfer to an independent body if a substantially greater Government expenditure were involved. “The greater your efforts to secure your own independent income, the more favourably will the Government look on your submission for a grant,” he said. Mr Marshall said a longterm, continuing task of the council would be to seek im-

provements in a number of directions. New Zealand had stepped over the threshhold of industrialisation—and industrialisation involved standards. “There must be growth in standards to serve and assist the process of industrialisation,” Mr Marshall said. How research and results of science may be applied to standards must be considered, he said. “There is still too wide a gap between science and industry. “This council could, perhaps more than any other body, help to bring about, a closer association of industry and science. “As New Zealand moves more towards economic independence, so more original New Zealand standards will be necessary,” Mr Marshall said.
