Competition games were full of surprises this week as many favourites were well beaten. The pairs contest is very interesting with the strong combination of R. Thompson and T. HiM reaching the finals, but D. Robertson and D. White, with their excellent teamwork and drawing, will make it a very interesting game to watch.

Robertson has toppled two favoured singles players this week to reach the final and will play R. Barrett. The policy of constant practice by White, R. McLeod, S. Price and Robertson has proved its worth as all these players have gained success in all grades and tournaments. SHIRLEY Club members are following with interest progress in the open pairs. A. Ellingford, a Shirley member, has reached the final 10. Solid practise and consistent, high-quality bowls has won E. Pash the colts cup. The dub pairs championship was won by R. Ward, who 'beat H. Brown in the final. REDCLIFFS The annual inter-club game against Dallington was won by Redcliffs, 108-81, due mainly to the excellent form shown by R. Prangnell who beat E. Greenwood, 34-7. The club championships have arrived at an interesting stage. In the fours. Prangnell remains with two lives and should be hard to beat, especially with the form he has shown this season. In the pairs, last year’s winner, S. Tonkin has reached the semifinals with one life. Only six players remain in the singles championship. They are D. Barr, J. Reid, C. Dixey, D. Page, T. Wood (2 lives) and A. McDougall (2 lives). The pennants competition organised by the Christchurch Bowling Centre was won by the Beckenham club for the first time in the history of the club. The club is at present celebrating its golden jubilee. DALLINGTON An exciting and interesting match was played in the final of the pairs championship when T. Joyce and R. Pirne beat N. Austin and L. McKendry, 21-20. At the 12th end. the score was 13 all and on the. 20th end. 20 all. Pirrie with his last bowl drew the winning shot. In the fours chamnionship semi-finals. McKendry beat E. Greenwood, 18-16, and H. Taylor beat Pirrie, 18.15. The Singles semi-finalists are D. Stuart. G. Rowland. G. Goodall and the winner of A.

Duthie and F. Bonifacio. An excellent drawing match was played in the quarter-finals when Rowland beat Stuart, who was the only two-lifer, 20-14. EDGEWARE The final of the pairs championship was played between J. Hayward and A. T. C. Johnstone (skip) and C. Tovey and J. Piesse (skip) after being all square on the tenth end, Johnstone scored a five and a four and Piesse could not make up the leeway, Johnstone winning 22-16. In the rinks championship, T. O. Chinnery beat D. E. Wood easily 30-7. In the other game H. G. Cowles and W. Burnip had a close game with Cowles winning on the last end, 24-22. The final will be played on Saturday. PAIRS TOURNEY Last Sunday, Christchurch W.M.C. held an all-day pairs tournament with 11 visiting entries in the A section. B. Philip and L. BECKENHAM The club can consider itself fortunate to have retained the Dowling Cup. In the annual match with teams from the Christchurch police, the score was tied, 178-all. Members from the club held their annual matches for the Calvert Memorial Trophy.

Eagle. “BOWLER” AGAIN Some more of “Bowler’s” views on the question of the three fours and pennants competitions. ... “Manning Cup is an excellent competition providing clubs with sufficient teams to ensure games for all mambers —home and away alternately —on Saturday afternoons. The answer to the whole problem is simple: abandon three fours and make greens available again on Saturday mornings. This will enable club championships to be organised on the basis of section play for rinks “drawn” from players properly classified as leads, seconds, thirds and skips. This is the first step to happier clubs.”
