last All Black tour that magnificent Maori wingforward Waka Nathan.” Mr MeLeod was Commonwealth Secretary in the Macmillan Government. He always believed international sport had a great part to play in the defeat of racism, he said. “The New Zealand action will strengthen the hands of those in authority in South African Rugby who loath political interference in their game. “We should play as many matches with South Africa as possible. The well-meaning but muddleheaded anti-apartheid movement does not agree, but then the best causes have the worst advocates. “Mr Holyoake is sending exactly the right message to South Africa. He is saying: 'You are an independent country. Pick what sides you wish and they are welcome as sportsmen. But we too are independent, you must not presume to tell us who we may or may not select,' ” Mr MeLeod wrote.
