Men Resume Work <N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA, Feb. 8. Five of six gangs resumed work on the Union Steam Ship Company’s freighter Koranui at Mount Maunganui this afternoon. The 75 watersiders were some of nearly 200 who were idle yesterday and this morning as a result of a dispute over safety conditions of work on the’ 5285ton freighter. They resumed work after a union meeting this morning. About 120 men are still idle, but about 105 of them are expected to resume work tomorrow. They were put on a two-day penalty yesterdav when they were called to work the freighter, but refused to accept engagement. A gang of 15 men, which was working the ship’s number three hatch when the dispute arose, has not yet resumed work. The Port Conciliation Committee is understood to be discussing the points at issue. Work on the vessel came to a standstill on Friday morning when 90 men walked off in protest “against safetv conditions of work.” An ultimatum was alleged to have I been issued by the companv to two wharf men of the number three hatch that unless 7 loading pallets they would be paid off.
