London Polynesian Club
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyrights LONDON, Feb. 7. A group of Maoris. Tongans, Fijians and Samoans in London have established a club for Polynesians who long for their grass skirt days again. the “Evening Standard” reported today. JThe club, to be known as the South Pacific Associa-
tion, will have one big aim—dancing. Western ballroom dancing will not be left out, but lazy Hawaii-style rhythms will be favourite among the 500 Polynesians who, it is hoped, will join. The association makes its debut on February 12 in the presence of the Australian High Commissioner, Sir Alexander Downer, and the New Zealand High Commissioner, Sir Thomas Macdon-
aid—as well as a former Governor of Fiji, Sir Kenneth Maddocks. The club secretary, a Maori, Sam Karatu, said: “There’ll be a welfare side to the association, too. “When we get on our feet and begin to acquire funds there will be financial help given to destitute Polynesians.” It is estimated there are about 1000 Pacific islanders living in London.
