Chamber Supports Transport Plan
The council of the Chamber of Commerce reaffirmed its support for the Christchurch master transport plan in principle.
On the recommendation of the industrial and city development committee st agreed to ask the City Council to take immediate steps to implement the proposals. The committee chairman (Mr R. K. Baker) said the report made last month by Professor . Colin Buchanan had been noted. The committee considered that the report would greatly strengthen the hand of bodies such as the chamber which had urged its implementation. Mr R. C. Neville said that if necessary the City Council should be asked to call a special meeting to ensure prompt implementation of the plan. He said he had read a newspaper report that implementation of the plan might be held up until it had been discussed in detail at a council committee meeting to be held in March. Mr Baker said the industrial and city development committee was seeking information about the availability of courses for people wishing to study town planning. He said that further con-
sideration of a claim that industry was encroaching on to valuable farming land around Christchurch had been deferred until a plan indicating land available for industrial development had been obtained from the Regional Planning Authority.
