Blind Soprano's Special Pupil
(NZPA.-Reuter —Copyright; GALT (Ontario). Lorraine Jackson is a soprano who is building a career as a soloist and voice teacher in spite of the handicap of total blindness. One of her pupils is an eight-year-old with another sort of handicap, cerebral palsy. “I can’t do a lot to teach ■ child who is eight years old, but I believe that this child can benefit from instruction,” says Miss Jackson.
“She can’t do everything other children can, but she has an interesting voice and this can be an outlet for her just as a game of baseball might be for another child.
“The handicapped child is a special child with special problems. 1 can help this child develop a sense of rhythm and I can make it easier for her to sing.” Miss Jackson began studying music seriously about 16 years ago at the Ontario School for the Blind in Brantford. She earned her grade 10 music certificates in both voice and piano. She became an associate of the Royal Conservatory of
Music and got her licentiate of music in 1962 from the University of Toronto, taking first-class honours every year.
