1 Short—And 3 Too Many

(By R. T. Brittenden)

The Cantabrians Rugby club, the membership of which consists largely of present and former Canterbury representatives, played a cricket match at Soutbbridge last summer.

Notwithstanding the result, the club is making another attempt on the standing of the summer sport on Sunday, with a game at Allandale against the Mount Herbert Cricket Club. It is difficult to imagine a man of the size of, say, R. H. Duff bowling effete little off-breaks, or M. J. Dixon treating all the bowlers as if they are R. A. Jardens, and smothering their deliveries almost at birth. There are some in the listed team who have had some experience in cricket, but the fact that 14 players have been named suggests that injuries are expected. It has been stated that the final eleven will be named on the morning of the match, after an inspection of the pitch. At Allandale, it is concrete The Cantabrians have selected an interesting team. D. J. Graham is in it, and if he was playing almost anywhere else in the world, he would undoubtedly be called for throwing. W. F. McCormick is there too, with a wealth of experience in softball to help him. But is it a coincidence that the 14 players can be lined out very -atisfactorily in Rugby formation, in positions they occupied (with one exception) at least occasionally in their playing days? The team is: full-back, G. Patterson; three-quarters, M. J. Dixon, W. F. McCormick, C. McDonald: fiveeighths, J. Hotop, P. V i Kearney; half-back, P. B. Vincent; number eight, J. Mullins: flankers, D. J. Graham and S. R. Southi all; locks, M. R. Dunne and V. C. Empson: front row, J. Creighton and N. Teague (one to be add--1 ed). 'And four to be omitted.
