RAILWAY LAND
Board Wants Use
“I hope the Railways will not hinder the development of the port simply by holding on to land that could be put to better use,” Mr B. G. Barclay said at the Lyttelton Harbour Board meeting yesterday. As Lyttelton was opened up more to road transport, it followed that there would be less rail transport, he said. There was a desperate need for flat land for road works and waiting areas for trucks. The board was in continual negotiation with the Railways Department, the chairman (Mr L. G. Amos) replied. “But they are very jealous of the land they have got, and acquisition of any of it is a difficult problem,” he said.
Mr F. I. Sutton said that when the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) visited the port he had indicated that the department would not sell, but might lease some land.
