TROTTING Third Heat Of Cup To Waitaki Hanover
(From Our Own Reporter)
DUNEDIN.
Waitaki Hanover emerged as a prospect for the final of the Dunedin Festival Gup on Saturday when he won the third heat of the Gup at Forbury Park last night.
Although his margin over the firstnight winner, Van Rebeck, was only a head, there was merit in his win. He received a check when Lady Charles broke after a furlong.
Waitaki Hanover, which is raced by Mrs J. and Mr F. Smith of Dunedin, was having only his second start since an enforced spell of more than 15 months and also his second start since joining A. J. Bourne’s Woodston team.
B. Young' improved with Waitaki Hanover in the middle stages and he was third with five furlongs left. He was two lengths behind Peerswick racing to the straight, but quickly mastered the pacemaker. He fought on ' gamely for his narrow win and can be expected to show still further improvement as a result of the run. Van Rebeck raced on the inside in about sixth position for most of the way. He was held up momentarily when going for a run at the furlong and once clear he finished resolutely, just failing to get up. Junior Royal, one of the taii-enders most of the way. finished fast for third half a length back, with Cuddle Doon only a neck away fourth.
Pancho Boy, which trailed Peerswick for most of the way, tired to fifth ahead of Lady Charles, Lordship and Peerswick, with Lauder Scott last.
The win favourite, Lordship, did not hit out freely and looked to be lame. At no stage of the race did he look likely to take part in the finish. Made Amends
Uteena, an unlucky runner on the first night of the meeting, made amends with an easy win in the Mosgiel Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. The double with Waitaki Hanover was £26 14s for £l.
She broke early but did not lose much ground, recovering quickly to take the lead from her stablemate, Castleton’s Gift, with slightly less than a mile to run.
She was closely attended by Free Return for a time but was soon clear again and raced to the straight ahead of Castleton’s Gift and Acquit, with Poupette improving fast after breaking with about six furlongs left. Uteena was not seriously tested and won handily by a length and a half from Acquit, which was always in the leading bunch. Poupette, after a shocking run, did well to finish third but she was two lengths and a half away. Le Chant, after drifting badly early and receiving a bad check at the five, finished very fast for a close fourth, ahead of Castleton’s Gift, Tronso and Ipiana. Snow Globe, Break Through, Ipiana, White World and Tronso and Forward March, which was pulled up, lost ground early. Grand Charge broke several times during the race and Flying Maiden broke near the two furlongs when well beaten.
The totalisator on-course handled £62,963 15s including, £10,791 5s doubles. There was no corresponding meeting last year.
The meeting was held in fine weather, but the track was soft after heavy rain during the afternoon. Just when Phillmark looked to have the field st her mercy in the Forbury Three-Year-old Stakes she attempted to jump a pool of water on the track and slowed to a walk. Chief Command, which had been fairly handy throughout, then raced to the front and won by half a length from Option. Phillmark carried 4569 5s tickets in a pool of 18,325. She started safely but slowly and must have been 48 yards from the leaders after a furlong. She moved up from the seven furlongs and took the lead with three furlongs left. She was clear by at least three lengths and pacing easily until she broke. Chief Command, one of the most consistent horses in
his age group, gained a deserved win, with Option running quite well for his placing. Co Pilot, second last most of the way, made up ground for third, three lengths back, a length in front of Goldmount, which shaded Roydon Prince and Phillmark, which were followed in by Bainbridge apd Inky Boy. Major Upset Maudella, the outsider but one in a 12-horse field, caused a major upset in the Kew Handicap, the second leg of the on-course double; She paid £29 7s. 6d for a win and the combination with Chief Command paid £445 9s for £l. Maudella was slow away but she improved sharply to take the lead with nine furlongs left. She led by two lengths at the straight entrance but Lusty Lad challenged strongly, whittling her advantage down to half a head at the finish.
Lusty Lad was never far away and finished two lengths in front of Loyal Light, which was slow early but handy over the last mile and a quarter. Next Day made up ground for fourth ahead of Epona, with a long gap to Falstaff, Which, like most of the others, was not at ease in the going. Protest At Winner
Supporters of the hot favourite, Rannach Lad, had an anxious watt before his win in the Leith Handicap was confirmed. A protest was lodged against his gaining first on the grounds of galloping between the five and the four furlongs. Rannach Lad was improving on the inner when he broke about 70 yards past the five furlongs post. He did not appear to lose much ground and he followed Phoebe Martial when that runner worked to the front just before the half-mile. Rannach Lad was with the leader at the straight entrance and he finished solidly to win by a length and a half from Karen Brigade, which made up ground over the last five furlongs. Marshella, which was well back most of the way, fought on gamely for third, a neck back and clear of Garrison’s Choice. Russell, which broke twice in the running, Phoebe Martial and Stella Globe, which was tailed off early. Better Than Rivals The dominating favourite. Cloudy Bay, proved a class above his rivals in the fourth heat of the Festival Cup. He was in front momentarily near the seven and then raced close to the pacemaker. Happy Ending. He held a short lead at the straight entrance and from then he was never at top to beat Space Cadet by a length and a half. Space Cadet, after leading early, was steadied a length or two and he came home strongly for his placing, shading Happy Ending, which lost 36 yards at the start. Golden Oriole paced an encouraging race for fourth but she was three lengths away, clear of Bellijily and Colours Flying. Golden Oriole, Happy Ending, Cheta, Admit, and Procella lost ground at the start.
Cloudy Bay gave R. Young his second win of the night. Young had elected to drive Wattaki Hanover in the final on Saturday night and D. C. Watts will drive Cloudy Bay. Town Martial, a good second on Saturday, gained a deserved win in the Royal Handicap. He had only Paddy’s Day behind him in the early stages of the race and dropped out to last after T
six furlongs. He improved gradually from then on and was fourth with five furlongs to run.
He followed Landlord into the straight, took a short lead soon after and held off a strong challenge from Paddy’s Day by a short neck. Landlord tired to third, well clear of the favourite.
