Cruelty To Sheep

(N.Z. Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 31. Boys cornered nearly a dozen sheep in a New Plymouth reserve on Friday, drove them into a muddy swamp, beat them with stakes torn from nearby trees and attempted to drown them. Two sheep are still missing under the scum-covered waters of the swamp. Others, buried up to their necks in the mud, were pulled from the swamp by Mr Frank Frethey, who grazes the area. Shocked neighbours have informed the police, the New Plymouth City Council parks and reserves department, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A Budleigh street woman said a gang of five boys, aged about 10 to 14 years, were responsible. “I saw one big mud-covered sheep try to escape from the swamp. One boy caught it, got on its back, and rode it back into the swamp. He was beating it with a stick,” she said. “I called out to tell the boy to get off the sheep. He was defiant and refused. “I then said I would telephone the mayor, and the boy replied, ’You can telephone Mr Holyoake if you like’.” Mr Frethey expects a number of the sheep to die. After being dragged clear of the swamp, the animals were *o weak they could not stand.
