Teachers Want Cultural TV
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. When additional television channels are introduced in New Zealand the New Zealand Post-Primary Teachers’ Association wants one of them to be maintained on a non-commercial basis under the control of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation.
This was announced today by the association which said it had informed the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr W. J. Scott) of its wishes. The association president, Mr J. R. Caldwell, said Mr Scott had given his assurance that the association’s representatives would be given full consideration at the appropriate time. Mr Caldwell said his asso-
ciation had passed this resolution at its last annual conference.
It had done so to ensure that some use was made of television in broadening and raising the educational and cultural level of New Zealanders.
“While, as post-primary teachers we are naturally urging that television be used in the classrooms wherever practicable and beneficial to the pupils, perhaps by means of school telecasts by the N.Z.8.C., we are also concerned that its undoubted educational benefits should also be available to the community at large,” Mr Caldwell said.
