Need For More Child Psychiatrists Seen

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, January 31.

New Zealand needed not only teachers trained to detect and help maladjusted children, but more child psychiatrists to train staff, a pioneer in child psychiatry, Dr. Mildred Creak, said today.

Dr. Creak, who comes from the Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, is in New Zealand for about a year at the invitation of the Mental Health Division of the Health Department. She will work in clinics and at Auckland Hospital as well as lecture at courses throughout the country.

“ft would help a lot if teachers were given an additional course in understanding mat-adjusted children, after they had been teaching for some years,” said Dr. Creak. She would also like to see courses designed for undergraduates. “This would help to create an Interest in postgraduate work in this field,” she added. In England there were both residential and day units attached to schools where teachers trained in child psychiatry could work. New Zealand had much work to do in this field. One difficulty was the shortage of staff to train others, she said.
