Good Prices On First Day Of Trentham Sales

WELLINGTON. Ninety -two lots of the 130 offered were sold at Trentham yesterday when the National Sales opened. They realised 97,067 gns, an average of 1055 gns a sale.

Last year, which had a record opening day in almost every respect, 141 lots were sold for 158,715 gns—an average of 11251 gns.

The comparisons are not strictly valid, because more lots were offered last year on the first of two days than there were yesterday, at the start of a three-day sale. Allowing for this, however, bidding was not as keen as last year. A big factor in yesterday’s sale was the many progeny by new sires. Buyers Were wary and kept mainly to yearlings by proved stallions. Another cause of the decline was the number of fillies in proportion to colts. More colts and fewer yearlings by new sires will be offered later in the sales.

Once again Australians paid the most money. They paid 59,775gns for 45 lots—average of 1485gns. Theme were six lots sold for 3000gns or more and all went to Australian bids.

Yesterday the top colt and two equal top fillies went to Australia. The colt, a chestnut by Summertime from Lady Letty, was bought by J. Shannon, acting for the Melbourne Bloodstock Agency, for 5300gns. The colt will be trained by G. Hanlon at Mordiallos, near Melbourne, for a Melbourne syndicate. Hanlon trains the New Zealand horses. Algaion and Matlock, and the dual Newmarket winner, Correct. The colt was offered by Mr W. Alexander, of Te Awamutu.

One of the two top fillies, a chestnut by Agricola from Kildare’s Lass, was sold by Mr J. Gray and the estate of A. Gray, Masterton, to T. J. Smith, Sydney, for 2500gns. The other, a black or brown by Summertime from Sabina, went to Mr A. Smith, of Adelaide. She was offered by Messrs K. C. Bird and J. D. Malcolm, Te Kauwhata. and reared at Kinross Stud.

The biggest Australian buyi er was T. J. Smith, with five lots worth 8350gns. J. Shannon bought seven for 7425gns and J. B. Cummings three for 6900gns. Cummings bought the second top colt, by Cyrus from Belle Time, for 3600gns. It was, sold by Mr J. Sarten, Auckland, and will be raced by an Adelaide syndicate comprising Messrs R. Murdoch, A. Whylie and H. Harvey. Cummings also bought a brother to Lu Filou for 2300 gns for the same owners. What would have been the top filly if sold, was passed at 4500gns, the reserve being 10,000ras. She is by Test Case from Divine and was entered by Baicarres Stud. The proprietor, Mr J. Lindsay, will race the filly himself and probably will be trained by G. W. Smith at Takanini. Mr P. S.
