Paltridge Dies

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PERTH, Jan. 21. The Australian Senator, Sir Shane Paltridge, who resigned as Australia’s Defence Minister on Wednesday, died in a Perth hospital today. He was 56.

He was admitted to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospi-| tai on Tuesday night: after a mild heart attack. Sir Shane Paltridge was re- ; ported to have been suf-' feting from cancer. He has been ill for some months and last year! underwent major abdominal surgery. Sir Shane Paltridge will be given a State funeral in Perth, probably on Monday. He was one of Australia’s more colourful politicians. A rotund, jovial man, he looked more like a successful publican than a senior Minister. He was both. Thirty years ago he left his job as a bank accountant to enter the hotel business in a hotel owned by a relative. Typically, he chose to start from the bottom up. His first job was a yardman.
