Rhodesia

Sir, —If Mr W. Bell had a kind heart he would not now be selfishly seeking balm for what he thinks is his own tragedy. If his Mr lan Smith wins the diplomatic dogfight, the native Rhodesians will be under apartheid. If Mr Harold Wilson wins they will be in the same position. What Rhodesia wants today is compulsory trade unionism and a sane system of social security. Until such a system is adopted no White Rhodesian will get a grain of sympathy from us tough New Zealanders. The sanctions imposed by Britain are just ridiculous. Diplomats, politicians and others have been to Lagos and pandemonium has now swept Nigeria. Singapore’s Premier Lee Kuan Yew should be called in to Rhodesia. He seceded, pocketed £2O million, and the show was over in a few days. He pulled the diplomatic carpet carpet from under Tunku Abdul Rahman and left him speechless.—Yours, etc.,

RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru. January 20, 1966.
