FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An anti-cyclone covering the North Island is moving eastwards. A slowmoving frontal zone lies over the South Island. A cold front in the south Tasman Sea is moving north-eastwards to southern New Zealand. Forecast: Canterbury.—Moderate variable winds, north-easterlies predominating about the coast, north-westerlies inland; rain in the Alps; scattered light rain elsewhere at times; mild temperatures. Marlborough and Nelson.—Moderate north to north-west winds on the Kaikoura coast; elsewhere fresh to strong north-wester-lies, gale force in exposed places about Cook Strait; mainly fine and warm; but cloudy about the Sounds with some drizzle morning and night; showers developing in the western ranges of Nelson this afternoon.
