£1 For Luck A South African two-rand note, the equivalent of a New
Zealand £l, brought to Dunedin by a South African visitor, Mrs M. J. Tompkins, will be passed on to a deserving Dunedin family. A Jewish produce merchant in South • Africa insisted on giving Mrs Tompkins the money to give to the first poor person she found in New Zealand—there is a belief that this Jewish custom brings good luck to both the giver and the receiver. The money will be passed on to a family who last week lost almost all their possessions when the interior of their house was destroyed by fire, the contents not being’ insured.
