Luggage Left In Britain
(N.Z. Press Association) . AUCKLAND, Jan. 17. About 50 British families who arrived at Auckland in the 35,400-ton liner Australis today to settle in New Zealand were uncomfortably aware of the mid-morning heat. Most of their summer clothes and nearly all their household effects had been left behind on the wharf at Southampton docks. An official of Chandris Lines, the owners of the liner, said the baggage had missed the ship because of weather and labour difficulties. It had been placed on board the Rangitane. which left London last week, and would arrive in Wellington on February 10, he said. The officials said the baggage, which had been destined for the holds of the Australis, would be sent from Wellington to the Customs bond store
most convenient to the passengers. A Scots woman, the mother of a small boy, said the master of the liner. Captain N. Labrinopoulos, had given her £lO to buy summer clothing for herself and her son.
The woman said most of her luggage, six suitcases and a
cabin trunk, had been left behind in Southampton. Some pasengers complained that the ship was too crowded for comfort and that the food tended to become monotonous. But officials said the liner had sailed from Greece with 2300 passengers, the rated capacity, and four of the chefs had been specially engaged on improving and varying the menu. The Australis had 1100 passengers when she berthed today.
