Six-Mile Track Title To Be Held In Greymouth
The Canterbury six-mile track championship would definitely be held at Greymouth on Saturday, the president of the Canterbury Athletic Centre (Mr W. A. Kennedy) said yesterday. Mr Kennedy said he had discussed the matter with the president of the Greymouth club (Mr T. Sweeney) and had been assured that its track was in as good condition as possible. It had been rolled and it appeared that the rainy season on the West Coast was over, he said. Concern over the condition of the Greymouth track was expressed at last week’s meeting of the Canterbury centre and it was left to Mr Kennedy to find out from Mr Sweeney whether it would be possible to hold the race on it as originally proposed. Because the championship is now being held next weekend, instead of on January 29 as approved by the centre
at the beginning of the season, it has been agreed to make the event a post-entry one. The only notable entries received by the secretary of the centre (Mr I, D. Teague) up to yesterday were R. J. Stevens (Olympic) and T. Preece (Toe H). However, it is almost certain that the West Coast runners, E. Gray and D. C. Mcenzie, will be starting. The touring Jugoslav athletes, Franc Cervan and Simo Vasic, will also be racing in the event, although they will not be eligible for the title. This will be the first time that the event has ever been held outside Christchurch. The intention is to give subassociations and isolated clubs the opportunity to stage a provincial championship event in their own district. The future of such a policywill depend considerably on the entry received for Saturday’s race.
