WAIMAKARIRI SCRUB FIRE

Two Outbreaks At Week-end

Fire, which broke out in the Waimakariri riverbed on Saturday night and was thought to have been put out, flared up again on Sunday afternoon, and eventually was brought under control before reaching extensive North Canterbury Catchment Board pine plantations on the south bank.

The fire was noticed about 6.30 p.m. on Saturday near McLean’s Island, and northwest of Harewood. Fire tenders from the Catchment Board and Paparua County Council attended and by 1 a.m. on Sunday the fire appeared to be out. It broke out again cn Sunday afternoon with a southwesterly wind change, and again fire tender crews subdued the blaze. Burning over about two miles of riverbed, and between 300 and 400 acres, the fire was confined to lupins and weeds.
