700 Guineas Paid For Southdown Ram
(New Zealand Press Association)
OAMARU, Jan. 17. A top price of 700 guineas was paid for a shearling ram at the third annual sale at Oamaru today of Southdown stud sheep from the Punchbowl stud of Mr H. J. Andrew, Maheno. The buyer was Mr A. T. Clark, of Alexandra. A pen of five shearling ewes was bought by Cameron Brothers, of Auckland for 70 guineas each, the top price in the section. One ram was bought privately at an undisclosed price for the Southdown Society of Great Britain. The market for rams was better than anticipated in view of the recent slump in prices in the North Island. Buyers from all over the country were present and bid-
ding was keen throughout the whole day. Of the 68 rams offered six were passed in for private negotiation. D. H. Robertson and Com pany, Kelso, bought two rams for 550 and 500 guineas, and J. D. and S. J. Robertson, of Kelson, and A. McCallum and Son, of Clinton, also paid. 500 guineas each for two rams: The average price for rams was about 250 guineas. An offering of 98 shearling ewes, comprising 26 lots, was sold in the morning at an average price of about 30 guineas. The top price was realised for the fifth pen sold, but the sale opened on a promising note when a pen of three ewes realised 60 guineas.
