MT. ETNA ERUPTS

No Threat Imminent (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) CATANIA (Sicily), Jan. 17. Mount Etna erupted yesterday, sending out a mile-long tongue of molten lava. But vulcanologists said the lava posed no imminent danger to the villages and farms that dot the sides of the volcano. The volcano’s north-east crater was exploding about every two seconds and hurling red hot rocks up to 900 feet in the air—higher than at any time since the new eruptions started last week after two years of silence. Scientists said they feared a major explosion might be brewing inside the 11,000 ft mountain.

Mount Etna’s eruptions have killed an estimated one million people over a period of 2400 years.
