RACING Gold Nuggets May Stay On West Coast

A good field, by South Island provincial standards, will run for £6OO including £5O worth of gold nuggets in the Kumara Handicap at the Kumara Racing Club’s annual meeting today.

This year the West Coast stables, with the likes of Vivien Robe, Wester, Totara Lad, Rae’s Hope, and Clipper, have likely material to cope with the Canterbury invasion; the nuggets might not cross the border.

The Kumara Handicap was once run over a mile and a half, and for many years after the distance was a mile and a quarter. But it has been more popular since it was redluced to a mile, and since the club gave up an autumn fixture to race in January.

With the consistent Vivien Robe in the field hopes for a top-weight’s victory in the Kumara Handicap look very bright. But in track conditions altogether different to those experienced on the South Canterbury-North Otago holiday circuit, when the ground was firm, there is every possibility of form upsets.

Wester, a noted performer on heavy tracks, could make holiday form valueless and win over this, his favourite distance. He has not raced since the Hororata meeting early in December, but the fresh run of this lightlyframed Red Jester gelding is usually the best. Jet Girl has been scratched from the Gilbert Memorial Hack Handicap, second leg of the double. Debbie Marie, El Beka, and Cantenay may now be the pick of this field.
