£½m Railway Line To Serve Mill
Three miles of new railway will be laid from Glenbrook |to Waiuku. I The programme also includes the upgrading and virtual reconstruction to heavy traffic standards of eight miles I of the Waiuku branch line from Paerata, 28 miles south • of Auckland, to Glenbrook. “The new railway line from Glenbrook to the mill site will be located so as to minimise any interference with existing properties,” the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) said today. The Minister said the upgrading of the present line would include replacing track with heavier rails, easing curves and gradients where
it was economical, and reballasting the line. He said the Railways Department would also—in consultation with reading authorities—install warning devices at minor public level crossings. The main road crossing near Paerata would be eliminated. Upgrading of the existing
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 7. The Cabinet has approved a £500,000 railway construction programme to serve the steel mill which will be built at Waiuku, where the £56 million steel industry will begin the first phase of production in 1967.
