CHARLES HAS 68

One Stroke Behind (N.Z. P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG. The South African, Harold Henning, with a four-under-par 67, led after the first round of the South African P.G.A. tournament at Germiston yesterday. One stroke away were the New Zealand left-hander, R. J. Charles, and another South African, Trevor Wilkes. Gary Player was next, on 70. Player is competing in his first tournament since he withdrew from the Wills event in Sydney in November.

The Durban Indian, Sewsunker Sewgolum, had a par 72. He is the only coloured player taking part in the tournament

Charles finished the outward nine in a three-under 33, and on the first eight holes he took only nine putts and finished with two more and a five on the ninth. His round was marred only by a six on the seventeenth hole.
