Sir, —Walden, Essex, emulating successful American schools in the experimental use of carpet for infant and junior classrooms, may have a wider influence than merely better learning in quiet. Have the first years of child life not a lasting effect, and the first of educational control? The influence of quiet is character-forming. Powers of observation and retention of memory fix patterns of behaviour, not rowdyism. Has the noisy world gone haywire from frustrated nervous human systems? What about habit formation? Infants, after carpet training, may demand and form a world fit to listen to bird song (if any are left) in preference to racket, vandalism, and pilfering (symbolism of love lack).
