Old Dunedin Tram Soon To Be At Ferry mead
‘"The Press’' Special Service DUNEDIN, January 6. One of the earlier Dunedin City Corporation box trams, nicknamed "Spiff” by members of the Tramway Historical Society of Christchurch, will be transported tb Christchurch and put in a museum to be built at Ferrymead. The tram, built by J. Brill in Philadelphia about 1904, was discovered by the society some time ago. It is expected that it will be taken to Christchurch within two months. The old tram was found resting on concrete blocks at Pine Hill, a northern suburb of Dunedin.
“It was in very good condition, apart from having no wheels,” said Mr I. Spicer, secretary of the Tramway Historical Society. The society will take parts of similar trams—including two gongs, roof panels, and warning bells—found in Dunedin, to help in the rebuilding. Numbered 11 by the corporation, the tram has been used as a storage shed for some time. Once it has been restored, it will stand with other old trams in the society's museum.
