ATTACKING RECORD

Scott Seeks 5000 Metres (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The New Zealand three-mile champion, N. I. Scott, will attempt to break M. G. Halberg’s national 5000 metres resident record at the Russian athletics meeting at Western Springs on January 31. Scott said yesterday he had I planned the last few months of his training with the final | meeting of the Rothmans tour lat Auckland in mind.

“I’ve set my sights on this meeting and the record,” he said yesterday, “but it’s really an attempt to gain selection for the Empire Games.” Scott said that he felt capable of bettering Halberg’s 5000 metres record of 13min 38.4 sec as his three-mile time of 13min 10.8 sec in the United States last year was worth slightly better. A slightly strained achilles tendon forced him to miss the three-mile race at Rotorua on Wednesday night and he will not compete at Napier on Saturday. He does, however, intend to run at Christchurch on Janu;ary 15 and possibly at Whanga. irei on January 29 as warm-ups to his race in Auckland.
