School Certificate Results Expected On January 15

“The Press” Special Scrricc AUCKLAND. January 6. School Certificate examiners having complctcd their main task, the final study of marks is now under way in preparation for the issue of results. These are unlikely to l>e announced any earlier than last year—January 15. University Entrance results' came out last year on Jantt-) ary 17. and are likewise not expected earlier this year. Education authorities in, Wellington have said that' they hope the results of both J

examinations will be avail able on the same dates this ' year. For the first time, the result and the certificate will be i sent out together. A total of 37.980 candidates sat School Certificate last November in a range of 37 subjects, and 850 assistantexaminers were recruited. For the compulsory subject of English alone. 120 markers were required, each of whom handled 350 scripts. Geography, with 25,601 candidates had 82 markers, and mathematics with two papers and 19.908 candidates needed 98 markers. To maintain uniformity in marking. a complicated method of cross-checking was employed. Specimen scripts at various levels of ability were photographed and sent to marking panels. In association with a supervising examiner, the panels marked some of these copies in relation to model answers suggested by the chief examiner. Markers then individually marked the remainder of the sample scripts and attended a subsequent meeting of local markers to compare their marks, question by question. Each marker then marked the main body of scripts allotted to him. The process has not yet ended. The assistant-supervi-sing examiners and chief examiners report to the Education Department on the work of each marker. These reports, with the data i

(supplied in the form of I “check marks," form the basis of the scaling process. Adjustments may be necessary to achieve uniformity between markers, to maintain i even standards between subjects and to maintain a rest- ' sonably even standard from I year to year.
