COMMENCEMENT
When the Aranui High School opens in February it will hold a “commencement” assembly with an address by the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. W. A. Pyatt) “to send pupils into the school year.” The headmaster (Mr W. J. A. Brittenden) said he had been attracted by a suggestion on this page some years ago that instead of a spate of good advice when schools were breaking up, speeches should be given at the beginning of the year and prizes only presented at the end. Aranui would not abandon its "dismission.” Mr Brittenden said, but the “commencement”
idea appealed to him, although used in a different sense from the traditional graduation in American universities which got the idea from Ireland. Next year’s “commence* ment” would include the presentation to the school of two handsome pieces of stage furniture by foundation staff and former pupils, respectively. The first would give a table and the second a lectern, both carved with the school crest and motto. The timber was kauri reclaimed from four 12-inch square pillars obtained from “Littleover.” a well-known early home in the district at the corner of Bickerton street and Wainoni road.
